Nicole Ari Parker, an American actress who has appeared in film and on television, and in stage productions, is known for portraying Teri Joseph, the fiery lawyer in the show Showtime's Soul Food. Nikki Kodjoe is her new name since she got married. Since childhood, Nikki Kodjoe was a natural actor. In a Maryland contest with high school students, she was awarded the prize for the best Actress. She earned her acting degree at New York University after working at 'The Washington Ballet Company' and performing in the theatre. Contractor was born at Mumbai in India, was raised in Nigeria from the time she was seven. She had already experienced a lot of travel and cultures from a early age. She attended boarding schools from the age of 7 until 9 in London. Then the family returned to Toronto (Canada) which is where they were raised for her entire life. Contractor trained in classical ballet in Toronto. Additionally, she excelled academically. She was enrolled in the Etobicoke School of the Arts. This is a specialized high-school for the arts, where she did not only study theater but danced and also. Contractor began her acting career at 16, following nearly 10 years of dance. Following her graduation from high school Contractor accepted a scholarship at The University of Toronto to pursue a dual major in psychology and sociology. In addition, she obtained an advanced degree in theatre. Contractor, who had completed her university degree and auditioned in an open audition for Pericles which was held at the highly acclaimed Stratford Shakespeare Festival, [Ontario Canadawhich she won the role. Her performance received rave reviews. her work in the 92 shows performed this play, which was named as the best production by Canadian critics in 2002. She was invited to attend Stratford's conservatory. This is a course which allows just four men and eight women are able to take an intensive 20-week training in classical theater.
